For my University Challenge Piece, I chose the Emily Carr prompt of "transform". This prompt required that I "produce a work that shows a process of transformation". I fulfilled this requirement by showing the transformation of a clothing store at night. In comparison to the day time, there is a greater contrast in the light being emitted from the store and the natural light from the sun. I show this contrast by making the outside feel like a dark rainy sidewalk. Meanwhile, inside the store business is going on as usual. This liveliness inside the store is portrayed by simplified mannequins and vibrant colours. These bright store fronts are becoming a more common sight around the city as we enter into the Winter months and the hours of daylight decrease greatly. I think I was successful in this piece because I explored and practiced a lot of painting techniques I will use in my concentration. This University piece definitely acted as a good warmup. In my future pieces, I want to do more planning before hand so I have a clearer idea of the direction the paining is going. On this piece I feel that I wasted a lot of time redoing things and changing colours because I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted.
