1.) Include a minimum of 2 pictures for each piece (clearly taken and cropped) (10 Marks)
2.) Answer the following writing prompts thoughtfully (30 Marks) 1.) Subject: what is/are your piece(s) of/about? Are you drawing from life or images I have two in-progress pieces I will be reflecting on today. The first is of outer space. It is being painted from my imagination and inspiration for the colours of the backdrop are taken from a abstract space painting I found online. While scientifically inaccurate, my solar system will comprise of approx. five planets. I will soon add more detail to the other undeveloped canvases as well. The piece its self is an homage to the miracle of human life. Amongst so many lifeless planets is a dark universe we have been lucky to be placed at the perfect distance from the sun, and live in a world with the right chemical composition to create life. I attempted to allude to this fact with my colour choice. My second piece is also drawn from my imagination with inspiration for the city scape taken from an online photo I found of New York's silhouette. While originally created to convey the beauty of cities at sunset, it has taken a new form. Entitled "Capitalism falling", the painting represents the greed and features a cities slowly moving towards a Hell like red colour. Moving forward, I plan on altering the size of the buildings to extend further down the canvas and adding more detail to the top portion of the painting. 2.) Inspiration: Have you come across any new inspiration since your first concentration piece? Did your first piece inspire you to take a new direction or improve/clarify on your overall concept? Since my first concentration piece, I have not come across any new inspiration. All that has changed is the size of canvas I am currently using. For 1# and 2# I used a smaller canvas but now for #3 I am using a series of four larger canvases. I feel this will allow me to be more expressive, and present more subject matter. In a smaller canvas my work often feels to small and enclosed, now I am also able to developed my ideas further. Working on a bigger canvas has been incredibly enjoyable and I think the rest of my concentration will be done on a larger scale as well. I have also realized I do not like painting buildings and I have started to paint natural subjects. 3.) Medium/Materials: What mediums/materials didi you use (paper, acrylic paint, graphite etc,)? What were you successful with and what did you struggle with in using these materials? So far I have just used acyclic paint and a pallet knife. I don't even use a paint pallet because I just squirt the paint straight onto my canvas. However, for my concentration #3 of planets, I used inks. I felt with just acrylic paint I wasn't able to achieve the "milky" feeling of space, so I turned to a more liquid medium. I applied this ink in four ways. 1. Dripping from the top of the page down 2. Dripping liquid on the middle of the page and spreading with a pallet knife 2. Dripping liquid on the middle of the page and spreading with blow drier 3. Flinging with a paint brush (I used this to create small white dots that create the illusion of stars) Combing the inks with the acrylic paint base, I was able to achieve that mysterious but magical feeling I wanted my background to have. I am very happy with the end result, and mixing more mediums, wether that be magazine clippings or charcoal, will defiantly be in my radar for future concentration paintings. 4.) Concept: How does each piece fit into the overall concept of your concentration? Has creating these images made your idea more clear or forced you to move in a new direction? My original concentration idea was exploring the relation ship between buildings and time. While painting #2 does have buildings, it purpose has slightly deviated. It was painted with the purpose of showing how cities change in a short period of time, from night to day, but it now represents the dark side of capitalism. Painting #3 is just "out of the world" in its correlation to the theme. Originally I was going to put buildings on the planets (see attached photo), however I prefer just solid spheres. More so, I feel I have enjoyed painting space more then buildings and I feel I will be moving in a new direction, both in subject matter and size of canvas. Worst comes to worst #1 and #2 will become breathe pieces. Moving forward I will just continue painting and trust that the dots will connect. 11/18/2015 0 Comments Concentration #11)1.) Subject: what is your piece of/about? Are you drawing from life or images For my first concentration piece I chose to paint a frontal view of the ancient Roman Colosseum. All the reference photos of the structure and shape were taken online as I have never personally went to see the Coliseum. I chose this building in particular because it has truly stood the passage of time. Being built from the mysterious "Roman Concrete" its delicate arches have remained through wars, famine and natural disaster, while the building around it have crumbled. This relationship between buildings and time is the theme of my concentrations so it only seemed fitting I paint this legendary building that is a homage to this very idea. 2.) Inspiration: Was there an artist, movie, peer, etc, that inspired/influenced you to create this piece? What was it that you liked about their work (process, materials, concept...)? This work is mostly inspired by the photo seen above. After seeing actual photos of the Colosseum, I wanted to see how different artists interpreted the building. After some google searching I came upon this painting. Although I do not know the artists, its composition spoke to me. The many bright vibrant colours add life to this old building and show it in a different light. While it is obviously not red, orange, white and blue; I liked the fact the artist took the risk to illustrate it as such. Up close it just seems like a bunch of random colours but as you look at it more, the deliberate brush strokes and emotion put into the painting become very apparent. I also took inspiration from Leonid Afremov, the artist I researched for my 10 ten challenge. I attempted to use similar brush strokes and palette knife techniques as found in his expressive paintings. 3.) Medium/Materials: What mediums/materials didi you use (paper, acrylic paint, graphite etc,)? What were you successful with and what did you struggle with in using these materials? This piece was created exclusively with acrylic paint on a canvas. I applied this paint by both brush and palette knife . In terms of brushes, I used a variety of different brush head sizes but they were all "flat" shaped. When using the palette knife, I applied paint in both horizontally and vertical orientations as well as on the side of the knife. I also discovered a new way to create a thick gloss texture using the palette knife. By using an excess of paint and then gently spreading it with the knife i was able to create the effect I wanted for the background. I think this technique will be helpful in my future paintings. I did have some technical problems however. I often found my self struggling to keep paints from mixing. Because I was using a variety colours, if I didn't let the paint dry before hand it would just become one clump and all my previous effort was covered. I think I will use the hair dryer more in the future to avoid this problem. 4.) Concept: How does this piece fit into the overall concept of your concentration? Has creating this piece made your idea more clear or forced you to move in a new direction? This piece has definitely helped me develop my concentration. My idea has become more solidified and I now have a better understanding of the content I want to depict in my next pieces. I think this painting has been successful so far and I intend to replicate the process in my other paintings. I also have a better idea of the style of painting I want to use throughout my concentration. In both this piece and my university challenge I have had time to practice this "expressive" technique I enjoy using. I am starting to refine my skills as I move through the year my paintings will become more "precise". I look forward to finalizing this piece and creating more art. 11/8/2015 0 Comments University Piece Reflection. For my University Challenge Piece, I chose the Emily Carr prompt of "transform". This prompt required that I "produce a work that shows a process of transformation". I fulfilled this requirement by showing the transformation of a clothing store at night. In comparison to the day time, there is a greater contrast in the light being emitted from the store and the natural light from the sun. I show this contrast by making the outside feel like a dark rainy sidewalk. Meanwhile, inside the store business is going on as usual. This liveliness inside the store is portrayed by simplified mannequins and vibrant colours. These bright store fronts are becoming a more common sight around the city as we enter into the Winter months and the hours of daylight decrease greatly. I think I was successful in this piece because I explored and practiced a lot of painting techniques I will use in my concentration. This University piece definitely acted as a good warmup. In my future pieces, I want to do more planning before hand so I have a clearer idea of the direction the paining is going. On this piece I feel that I wasted a lot of time redoing things and changing colours because I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted.
11/8/2015 0 Comments Concentrations Ideas! My first idea is to explore the relationship between buildings and time. All twelve pieces will be done with paint, in a expressive and abstract style. The paintings will depict either one of three scenarios: A building deteriorating with time due to natural or human forces, the style of the building changing due to cultural changes and the area around the building changing while the structure remains unchanged. The twin towers site before and after 911 is something I think I might paint. My second idea is to paint storefronts. I got this idea after seeing a collection of photos taken of storefronts on the art field trip last year. Like my first idea, the pieces will be done with paint with expressive brush marks and perhaps a pallet knife. There would be a wide variety of stores, each of the 12 pieces would be a different vendor. I would also explore how stores change from low class to higher class neighbourhoods/cities. The comparison of a pig head in a butcher shop to a Forever 21 store comes to mind. 10/10/2015 1 Comment October 10th, 2015https://www.pinterest.com/zacharyyamaoka/art-work/ 15 Photos of Leonid Afremov Art work Leonid Afremov was born in Vitebsk, Belarus in 1955. He attended the Vitebsk Art School. He currently lives and works in Playa de Carman, Mexico. Most of his paintings are done on canvas with oil paints and a palette knife. You can see in all of the pieces I choose that he uses bright colours and simplified figures. The palette knife he uses gives all his paintings similar texture and expression. He always paints a reflection on the ground. All of his work is either of trees, buildings or people under either. He paints mostly night scenes which allows for the street lamps and other lights sources to illuminate the painting. I think the Artists is exploring how alive an area can be at night. This is contradictory because we associate night time with darkness, but in his paintings have very vivid colours and vibrances.
